The Ghostly pieces got some nice press- shout out to design sponge, colossal, dvdp.

Had a kids workshop last week- this angry birds pop up card was designed by Owen. The bird flies when the card is open. so rad.

I'm now in the studio working on a bunch of commissions...a robotic hospital installation, a possible double rainbow for an accounting firm, some work for the Queen of Jordan...it's about to be real crazy in the studio.

I just got back from 3 weeks in China! Anne Mondro and I studied traditional kite making with a master kite maker...see our exploits here.

Working on a new project for Ghostly Int. which should drop in about a month. I'm packaging them this week! Limited edition of 50. Get ready.

I'm working on two top secret projects: one involves paper and light, the other paper and...um... apple things....
Lauren and Rachel are helping assemble the new Ghostly series- due out in late spring/ early summer. This summer is going to be CRAZY! Just secured funding for a trip to China in June- me and Anne Mondro are going to work with a kite master. wooooo!

My cat alarm clock goes off at about 6:30.

After feeding the alarm clock I stumble in the dark to the bathroom.

If you are reading an email from me there is a 90% chance I wrote it from the bathroom. The ipod has changed the way I do business. I'd like to have a bathroom office someday...

Enter the studio and put out any small fires from clients / students and prepare for the day

The new signage in Ann Arbor is very prominent. Kamilah compared it to a hands on museum display. I like it for its bluntness.

The sun starts to show up on my morning commute. Today I teach 3D design at WCC.

#3 Bus to Ypsi is 35 minutes too long than it needs to be but I do get a tour of the VA hospital and Huron Valley Highschool. I've also met some bizarre characters along the way.

WCC is a frozen tundra of learning.

My classroom is a windowless one point perspective room in the TI building.

Before my students show up I watch a bit of the state of the union.

I wonder who's office is inside the men's bathroom at Wastenaw Community college. I don't have an office at WCC and wonder if it would be a good or bad thing to have a bathroom office.

At the student union, It's fur coat weather.

Back in Ann Arbor I drop off my last copy of PAPERCUTS to be shipped out. Time to re-up the 3rd order!

It is so cold.

Stop by Sparrows in Kerrytown to pick up some food.

Stop in to Kosmos for a quick lunch. Ate here 2 weeks ago with Bob Stack and kept thinking about the bibimbop since then. so good. Soon there will be a giant robot here, with food coming out of its mouth. Bob Stack is a genius.

Back in the studio after lunch I finish this piece Ive been working on. Lily helps.

Mostly she just watches the birds.

Document and Photoshop the piece. Tony Hepburn once told me "you are not your artwork, you are the digital representation of your artwork". Yes, I am rocking CS1. They made fun of me at siggraph this past summer for using CS1. It's not the tool, its how you use it. I still use Auto cad from '93.

Take a break and read a bit of Oscar Wao's wonderful life. It feels like a gabriel garcia marquez novel...I'm about 1/2 way through and ready for some magical realism to show up. I have a verona habit and eat too many.

This results in a nap. lily is all about it.

Brave the cold to see the Stamps lecture at the Michigan Theater. With the wind it is far below 0.

Dave Hickey is speaking for FREE!!!

Dave Hickey is incendiary. He questions the idea of an arts education at a University. Addresses the role of professors, students and Administration. It is like listening to your texan grampa go off and talk shit. He is brilliant. I get to meet him afterward and he signs my copy of Air Guitar.

Run into Ben Teague after the lecture, man I love that guy.

Walking home I always like this piece under the bridge by the YMCA. There are tons of toy throw ups in Ann arbor, but no one has gone over this piece.

Double full moon or something pretty close to it.

Come home, eat some leftovers and watch a few episodes of season 5 of lost. I am so ready to get back on the island in season six.

Freiburg Im Breisgau

Two students dissect the work

I Just returned to the states from a week long trip to Germany. I met up with the students at IMTEK- The Institute of Microsystem Technology at the University of Freiburg. I did a presentation of my work then conducted a workshop showing them how to fold paper- they plan on using paper folding techniques on the micro (and possibly nano) scale! One student was looking to adapt a rotating design I made into an aperture for optical devices. There is so much to discover on such a tiny level!

I had a few days to check out Freiburg and the black forest. Tried to find a cuckoo clock but was unlucky in my attempts.

I've been at the University of Michigan for 3 years and I've been just been promoted! I'm now working for the DHARMA Initiative! So far I've been folding paper and helping the engineers with designing magnets. They don't tell me me too much, but they like me and soon they say I'll get to go on a submarine!

It's sort of top secret but I don't think they would mind me posting a few pictures.

This is my new desk. They moved me from the school of engineering to this basement in another building. I had to sign all these release forms before moving down there.

The Dharma people keep having me build these models for some stations or something. This one has to do with magnets.

I can't believe they let me drive the van to central campus. Spring time in Ann Arbor! This van smells like beer and has an 8 track player.

When I came back with the van this guy had spray painted the number 15 on my cat. Lily was so confused. He said he needed to borrow her for a moment, I'm sure she will be ok.

After lunch we sat and watched the monitors for a few hours. totally boooring.

My students are awesome.

The lack of wind did not stop us from having a killer kite festival this past Sunday.

The Llyod Hall Scholars show off their kites.

The 3D design students from Washtenaw Community College hard at work.

Without the wind, we had to run to get the lift we needed.

Families from the community also came to fly kites.

My students and I are hosting a kite flying festival April 5th at Palmer field in Ann Arbor. Bring your friends and your kites. There will be fabulous prizes for best kites and highest flying kites. More details to follow!

These are the final moments of our talk at NYU on FEb 21st 2009. Some kids jumped on stage to play and you can see Ren Weschler and I hanging out at what looks like a Dharma station (the swan perhaps). That mysterious voice is Max Shtein explaining the need for artists and engineers to work together.

My work will be featured on a new show in the UK airing on Sky One called oops tv. Here's the show description:

"OOPS TV is a brand new comedy entertainment show for Sky One. Voiced by Justin Lee Collins, it takes a look at the best TV out-takes, home videos, CCTV shockers, sporting bloopers and YouTube shenanigans from all over the world. From newsreader nightmares to bungling burglars, wedding woes to the world’s funniest pets, if someone somewhere has done something stupid, and someone else has been there to film it, and someone here from the legal department has said we can put it in the show, then we’ll put it in the show."

2) I was just invited to talk about my drawings at Harvard this Spring. Boston friends- I'll let you know dates once we get them worked out.

3) I've spent the past week putting together a 26 page pdf paper craft version of Howl's moving castle. As if that wasn't hard enough, the whole thing was in Japanese.
